Supplier Financial Risk Assessment for UK SMEs

Published 6 November 2026

You do not need a credit-risk department to screen suppliers sensibly. A proportionate framework — deeper checks for critical suppliers, lighter ones for the rest — fits most SMEs.

Tier your suppliers first

Not every supplier deserves the same scrutiny. A stationery supplier is replaceable tomorrow; the sole source of a critical component is not. Tier suppliers by how much their failure would hurt — revenue impact, substitutability, contract length — and match the depth of checking to the tier.

The core checks for any significant supplier

  • Confirm the legal entity on the register: name, number, status, trading age
  • Review at least two filing periods: turnover trend, profitability, equity
  • Check filing behaviour: late or missing accounts are a visible warning
  • Note the account type — a micro-entity filing tells you far less than full accounts

Deeper checks for critical suppliers

For suppliers whose failure would stop your business, go further: read the notes to the accounts for customer concentration and debt structure, compare them against industry peers, and consider what their working capital position implies about their ability to fund your orders. Ask directly for management accounts or references where the filed picture is thin.

Monitor, don't just check once

A supplier checked at onboarding can deteriorate over a two-year contract. Saving critical suppliers for monitoring means new filings and status changes reach you as they happen — turning an annual exercise into a continuous one.

Document the decision

Record what you checked and what you concluded. If a supplier fails and a customer, insurer or auditor asks how they were vetted, a timestamped evidence snapshot is the difference between a defensible process and an awkward silence.
